About the Catch

Enjoy exciting fishing on the best patches to be found in the Spencer Gulf waters surrounding the Moonta Bay and Port Hughes area on board “Wildfishin Charters S.A."

These waters produce snapper of all sizes from 2 pounds to 35 pound monsters and are caught here all year round. Quite a few are captured when fishing for K.G.’s.

The most memorable of these was a 28 pounder hooked and landed in 4 metres of water on 15 pound main line (braid), after a struggle lasting 45 minutes, by an inexperienced 76 year old angler! He was ready to go home after that one fish! However, more were to come.

Our snapper fishing has peaks and troughs throughout the year like any other species but the Summer and Autumn are definitely the most predictable periods. During this time the fish school become a lot easier to locate, quite often resulting in a gentle catch and release tactic being adopted for a few hours a day.

During early 2001 over 400 snapper between 10 – 20 pounds were caught and successfully released by relatively inexperienced, but very keen amateur anglers on “Wildfishin Charters” (after they had achieved their boat limits).

King George Whiting are not uncommon in the 50 centimetre sizes and occasionally up to 60 centimetres. When they are on the bite, double headers are numerous, and when they’re around 45cm size K.G.'s make for great fun, not to forget of course, they are arguably the finest table fish in the sea. K.G.’s are caught on my boat mostly between March and November with the peak time (when the fish school) being May to August.

Australian Salmon give anglers a good go on light gear from the boat, and we fish for these with both bait and lures. Many people consider their eating qualities to be poor, however, when you catch some I’ve got some great cooking tips for you. Salmon are mostly around between June to September.

Summer months not only produce snapper but I often target sharks during this time, with many species being caught, i.e. gummy’s, school sharks, bronze whalers, hammerheads etc and we see a few white pointers as well. Most of the whites are in the 12ft to 18ft sizes, making spectacular viewing as they move effortlessly through the water, with a body as big as a horse.

Other species caught on “Wildfishin Charters” are snook, squid, garfish, sweep, drummer, leatherjacket, blue crabs and a few more, but you get the idea.
